Despite the look on my face, I love this hat!!
This hat was a Christmas gift from Mom (aka Mumsy) & Dad and I love it! Ive got a couple of other winter ones that are also pretty kewel. Its a bit chilly in the ole stone cottage tonight, and I didnt feel starting a fire in the front room, so I layered some clothes and put my hat on. Then I did my self portrait in pencil. I liked the look of it, and didnt want to possibly ruin it, so I scanned it and dropped colour into it via photoshop. Glad I did because I like the original just a tad more than the coloured one.
Real watercolor wouldve been nicer of course, but I thought Id experiment. It was fun!
I want to thank my family and husband for the wonderful encouragement they have given me lately!! More than once its made me pick up the pencil when I might have otherwise avoided drawing.
Tomorrow I begin Vein of Gold and my 20 minute walks! Gus will be loving it. I am also going to start a 30 day grid of 1.5 squares to draw in, as a part of a group project started by the Everyday Matters (Danny Gregory) yahoo group. Well all be scanning our pages at the end of the month, so Ill post mine here. Wonder what itll be like to draw in such a small space? I find it hard enough to sketch in a 8.5 by 5 space! Havent done thumbnails in a while..
Anyway..that means its bedtime!
I can smell the weekend in the air!! Mmm..smells like we might invite some peeps over….you know who you are! Miss you guys! Still havent discussed Samoa!!! We shall call tomorrow!!!

OH! A subject close to my heart! I am not one much for group challenges, so I don’t know that I will do the EDM GRID. BUT! I love creating small works of art and find that no space is too small to fill. I don’t consider them thumbnails so much as drawings, paintings, art! There is a man in my figure drawing class who brings HUGE pads and fills the entire surface in life size drawings. I am in awe, but so comfortable in my small size!

I love the self portrait! I like the line drawing better too! the other is interesting and neat and if I hadn’t seen the pencil drawing I would have never known I thought the pencil drawing was better!

Yes, I’m realising now that the drawings are much much more than thumbnails, but I hadn’t really considered them as thumbnails anyway, because they weren’t going to be preliminary things, rather primary.
They ARE the art.
I know what you mean about being comfortable with a certain size surface..I used to only be more comfortable doing life drawing on a huge sheet of newsprint.
Then I learned how to draw small, more well-proportioned, more accurate figures..several on a page. Now I’m able to work in different sizes, but it’s fun to do artwork this small! I’ve never really tried it on a regular basis before!

Yeah..I must admit it, I like doing self portraits. Probably several reasons..ease of finding a model who won’t get bored and is easy to study thoroughly, self-discovery, etc. I don’t do it as often as I like though..maybe the fear of appearing to be self-absorbed? (I know, don’t worry about ‘keeping up appearances’ ..ahem..just like "Mrs. Bucket", Mumsy!)
I learned years ago that a great way to do self portraits is using two mirrors..although it can be tricky to set up at first, it provides a way to get the closest to a three demensional view..and at least a different angle..not just head-on.
