Analyze This!

Tuesday, July 6th, 2004

Had a great weekend, great talk to my parents on the phone, fun with Mum, Dad and the family, and a fun night on Saturday with Daniel and Adrian.
Got a call yesterday from a friend who works for a mental illness fellowship here in Melbourne, and she said they’re trying to get together a gallery showing of artists and writers who have mental illness, and she thought I’d be interested in participating. You bet my crazy a** I do!! (Just kidding)
If that isn’t a good motivation for doing more painting!

I’m glad to have had the training in the “commercial” field of art, but have always had a great affinity for fine arts and love painting works that are about 2′ x 3′ or larger, rather than 10″ x 24″. Yet I’ve kind of figured I’d not be interesting in trying to show my stuff in galleries, maybe because I’ve seen the kind of people, other than art students, who attend these things.. and the kind of things they say. You know, trying to analyze something that they have no idea about just to try and impress someone else.
But I would have to say that my own view of that is wrong too. It’s a stereotype, like any other. So I’ve been considering over the last 4 years if I ought to start painting and entering juried exhibitions or getting my work shown in galleries. Getting into a show like this would be great. For my resume, for the experience, and for the chance to educate people or at least raise awareness about mental illness a little more.

I know some of you who read this show your work in gallery spaces. Just since we’re talking about it here, I wouldn’t mind some comments or emails telling me the experiences and oppurtunities that arose from showing your work this way. Hints on slides, packing artwork, etc. wouldn’t go astray..
I’ll do my own research on this stuff too.
I’m going to definitely get involved with this show and see where it leads me..
