Painted Swing

Broke out the oils finally!:

Looked through my old sketchbook today and found sketches I’d done for book cover roughs I’d done for someone a couple of years ago. Her story was about a girl who does swing dancing, and so I had lots of sketches of swing style clothing. I thought the one page with rows of dresses on it looked really cool, so I chose a selection of them and painted them on one of the canvases I’d bought a while ago:

Then I roughed in a background:

And I was going to let it there for the time being, but when I looked at the photos of it I got excited and decided to block in some solid colors:

I did a little more, but have to let the paint dry a bit so that the black doesn’t muddy up the rest of the paint. Mainly have to touch up the white specks, put in hightlights and shadows, add some details and it’s done! I am enjoying colorful blocks and a more graphic quality as I look at artwork these past couple of days. I think I may look for some subjects that lend themselves to this kind of style…

Peztastic!

Noticing how late it was getting I said to Cam, “I haven’t posted an entry yet! Hrmm..don’t know what to post, so I’ll just post a bunch of cool links tonight”. When I typed a search for “Cool art blogs” to get some new sites (not that we need any with all the cool ones doing the Artist’s Way), I noticed about 6 links down, “9 Moons Ago” among some others. Then I thought, “Wow. Hey yeah..if I’m an art blog, where’s my ART?!” So I decided to draw something quick and dirty. Cam sugggested a couple of pez dispensers as subject matter, and I thought that would be cool. I sketched them, scanned the drawing, and colored them in photoshop. Love how it turned out! I’ve got to do some more of this kind of thing! I bring you Luke Pezwalker and Batpez:

The Pez dispensers got me thinking about childhood things, and some of the tasks this week focus on childhood memories and experiences. I even had a dream last night in which I was a child, back in my old neighborhood with friends I haven’t seen in years..and I mean YEARS! But it’s cool to be an adult and still have that sense of play that you had as a child. I sent Cam those Pez dispensers along with other fun toys one year; silly putty, a dart gun, a coloring book and sparkle crayons. I sent another friend a clear purple “toy box” with play-doh, bubbles and a few other fun things. She said it was one of the best gifts she’s ever gotten in the mail. I think for my Artist Date this week I’m going to buy myself a toy! Something small, but fun. Still thinking of the favorite childhood food I want to have/make this week. Yep, I think I’m in the groove of things. Next thing on my list is to take a look at my habits! That’s a good one.
